Information about BRADFORD Vibrant, diverse and cosmopolitan, Bradford is a city rich in history, unique heritage and cultural diversity. The whole district covers 143 square miles, 60% of which is made up of green open spaces. Bradford owes much of its heritage to its past as a centre of textile production. by 1841 there were 38 mills in the city and at one time it was estimated that two-thirds of the country’s wool was processed in Bradford. Just outside of Bradford is the village of Saltaire. Built between 1851 and 1876, it was conceived by wool baron Sir Titus Salt to house his workers. No pubs or pawn shops were allowed, and his stated intent was to build ‘a paradise on the sylvan banks of The Aire, far from the stench and vice of the industrial city.’ Most of the village remains as it did when Sir Titus died in 1876. the mill now houses the world’s largest collection of work by Bradford born artist David Hockney. The village of Thornton was the birthplace of the Bronte sisters, and the parsonage where Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne spent their childhood can now be visited. The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in the city centre houses five floors of highly interactive displays and galleries dedicated to digital technology, news, animation and light. With a huge Asian population, Bradford is hailed as the curry capital of England with over 200 restaurants serving food from Kashmir, Gujarat, The Punjab and beyond.
